Parklet at Sultan Gate with URA
1Project Information
Repurposing public carpark lots into a communal seating area at Sultan Gate.
A collaboration with URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority) and OKG (One Kampong Gelam) we repurposed parking lots into a communal space for the public and residents of Sultan Gate to enjoy. We designed a series of outdoor furniture for the space, made using upcycled local khaya.
Reintroducing a sense of community into the seatings were key. We weaved in influences special to the neighbourhood, interactive elements and arranged the furniture for easier face-to-face conversations.
The ‘cajón’ seating, inspired by the concept of a drum circle, takes on the iconic box-shape. Fully crafted from solid wood, a segment of the seat was hollowed out and covered with a plywood cap to produce a sound when struck with your palms or fingers.
The spinning top seat, created to add an element of play for users, was loosely inspired by the Malay spinning top. Constructed using a dense base to bolster the seat down and fitted with a rotatable top, we utilised ball bearings between the lid and the base to allow the seat to spin smoothly.
