A unique bookbridge made out of CLT for the new private space at NUS Central Library.

Spanning 30 metres and built entirely out of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), this bookshelf commissioned by NUS Singapore was designed with innovation and durability in mind.

CLT is commonly used in large-scale construction projects, as an eco-friendly alternative to steel or concrete. It is engineered to be able to bear large weights, while also possessing a fire-resistance rating of up to 120 minutes, despite being made entirely out of timber.

The unique, alternating grain—running along the sides of this shelf—not only captures the attention of the eyes, but also plays a huge part in increasing the structural integrity of the shelf.

The shelf was first broken down into smaller modules. Each module was then stacked and connected horizontally in a row. We used an innovative fastening system—created by Italian company Rothoblaas to allow the assembly to be much more efficient.

Design and R&D by School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore (NUS, SDE).
