Taking references from Japanese architecture, we built 3 inspired furniture pieces made using Angsana, for our clients M & S.

3m Angsana dining table:

The dining table, taking reference from torii—a traditional Japanese gateway, commonly found at the entrances to Shinto Shrines—spans 3m long. Done in full solid Angsana, the tabletop was chamfered along its edges. This provides an illusion of a thin profile, giving off a ‘floating’ look.

The table legs are rounded along its edges as well, creating a gentler contour and a more harmonious flow visually.

Display cabinet:

Building onto their space, our take on these inspired display cabinets feature glass panels along all sides, allowing natural light to flow through. The solid Angsana frame highlights a chamfered edge, keeping the cabinet’s structure slim.

A variation of a double rabbet buttjoint is showcased on the sliding doors, a small detail that reflects a chamfered profile. Without the use of any hardware, we used the tongue and groove method in replacement of a sliding door track.

Separate removable drawers were also done to cater more storage space.

Alcohol cabinet:

Keeping the design language consistent, the alcohol cabinet’s top, done in Angsana, carries the same bottom chamfer profile as the dining table. This also created a finger groove to access the handle-less doors.

Its vertical post with floating shelves, done in oak veneer, is inspired from traditional Japanese sliding doors. Meant for both aesthetics and functional purposes: providing structure and encasing hidden LED lights.

The cabinet is cladded in vertical solid ramin strips, stained to match Angsana, laying out a slotted look.
